When it comes to people’s careers, the accepted wisdom is that your job is to be endured and put up with. If you love what you do then you’re one of the lucky few. If you love what you do and you make a good living from it, then you’re rarer than a lottery winner. It’s almost like you’re expected to be miserable at work.
But could there be another way? Could you actually look forward to Monday mornings?
Well if you had a career that truly inspired you, something you were passionate about, then ‘yes’. Instead of work just being a means to an end (‘I go to work to get money to pay the rent and pay for food and the left over money to pay for fun things’), it could be a source of pleasure in itself. If you are doing work that inspires you.
But how often do people ask themselves ‘what work would inspire me?’. Generally people spend so much time over choosing their holidays, mulling over every little detail. But when it comes to the work they will be doing for the next 10, 20 or 30 years, such analysis is often sadly lacking.
It’s about asking yourself the right questions:
- - What work would inspire me?
- What work would be a good fit for my personality?
- What type of work environment would I like to work in?
- What type of work/life balance do I want?
- What hours/days/months of the year do I want to work?
It’s when people start asking these questions that something interesting happens. In most cases, people find that money is not normally the most motivating factor in what constitutes a great job.
So isn’t it about time you started asking yourself these questions?
